When Yoshi graphed the lines and , she got the graph shown at right.

  1. One of the lines at right matches the equation , and the other matches . Which line matches which equation?

In the equation is the -intercept.
Match the -value in each equation to the -intercept on the graph.

  2. Yoshi wants to add the line to her graph. Predict where it would lie and sketch a graph to show its position. Justify your prediction.

The line has the same slope so it will be parallel to the other two lines. Again, use to -intercept to decide where the line will be on the graph.

It would lie between the lines and because it has as the intercept.

  3. Where would the line lie? Again, justify your prediction and add the graph of this line to your graph from part (b).

The negative slope tells you that the line will travel downward. Once again, use the -intercept to decide where to put the line.

A 4 quadrant coordinate plane with the graphs of 2 lines. The left line goes through the points (negative 2, comma negative 1) and (0, comma 3). The right line goes through the points (0, comma negative 2) and (1, comma 0).

Use the graph in the eTool below to solve the problem.
