The three-dimensional shape at right is called a cylinder. Its bottom and top bases are same-sized circles, and its “side” is perpendicular to the bases. What would the shape of a flag need to be in order to generate a cylinder when it spins about its pole? (You may want to refer to problem 3-3 to review how flags work.)

A can shape with the top of the can shaded, and a dashed curve to show the outline of the bottom back side of the can which normally would not be seen.

The flag would have to be a rectangle. The height of the cylinder would be the same as the height of the rectangle, and the cylinder's radius would be the same as the width of the rectangle.
