Simplify the following expressions.

1. $1 \frac { 1 } { 2 } + 2 \frac { 1 } { 8 }$

• Covert both mixed numbers to fractions greater than one.

$\frac{3}{2}+\frac{17}{8}$

Make both fractions have a denominator of 8.

$\frac{12}{8}+\frac{17}{8}$

Simplify.

$\frac{12+17}{8}=\frac{29}{8}=3\frac{5}{8}$

$3\frac{5}{8}$

1. $\frac{4}{5}-\frac{2}{3}+\frac{1}{6}$

• Convert each fraction to have a denominator of $30$.

$\frac{9}{30}=\frac{3}{10}$

1. $5\frac{3}{5}-1\frac{4}{5}$

• Change these to fractions greater than one and then subtract.
