Solve each equation for x.

1.  $10 - 2 ( 2 x + 1 ) = 4 ( x - 2 )$

• Remember to check your answer to make sure it is correct.

• One way to start is by multiplying.

Simplify by adding 4x to each side.

Simplify again by adding 8 to both sides.

Divide both sides by 8.

$10 − 4x − 2 = 4x − 8$

$8 = 8x − 8$

$16 = 8x$

x = 2

1.  $5 - ( 2 x - 3 ) = - 8 + 2 x$

• Remember to distribute the negative.

$x = 4$
