Calculate the expressions below. Then compare your answers from parts (a) and (b) to those in part (a) of problem 8-95, and parts (c) and (d) to part (b) in problem 8-95. What do you notice?

1.  $\frac { - 6 + \sqrt { 6 ^ { 2 } - 4 ( 1 ) ( - 40 ) } } { 2 \cdot 1 }$

Remember Order of Operations when solving these.

1.  $\frac { - 6 - \sqrt { 6 ^ { 2 } - ( 4 ) ( 1 ) ( - 40 ) } } { 2 \cdot 1 }$

This may look similar to part (a), but note there is a minus sign in this one.

1.  $\frac { - 13 - \sqrt { 13 ^ { 2 } - ( 4 ) ( 2 ) ( - 24 ) } } { 2 \cdot 2 }$

Check the signs carefully.

1.  $\frac { - 13 + \sqrt { 13 ^ { 2 } - ( 4 ) ( 2 ) ( - 24 ) } } { 2 \cdot 2 }$

Check the signs carefully.

The answers you get for parts (a) through (d) will match those found in problem 8-95.
