Solve each equation below for x. Explain or justify each of your steps. Be sure to check your solutions.

1. $\frac { x } { 8 } = \frac { 3 } { 4 }$

• Multiply both sides by $8$.

$8\cdot\frac{\textit{x}}{8}=\frac{3}{4}\cdot8$

$x=\frac{24}{4}$

$x = 6$

$5x + (−x) + (−1) = 5 − 2x$

$2x + 5 − x = x − 3 − x$

$x + 5 = -3$

Isolate x by subtracting 5 from each side.

$x + 5 − 5 = −3 − 5$

$3(−8) + 5 − (−8) = −8 − 3$

$x = −8$
1. $\frac{2}{5}=\frac{x}{40}$
