Using the given population and assuming your math class is a sample from that population, come up with a research question that could be asked to determine parameters from the given population. Write each survey question and what you are hoping to show from each question. Examples are given for each population.

Answers will vary. Do your best to create an unbiased question.

  1. Population: Students at my school

    Example:

I would ask my math class this survey question: If the school library were open at 7:15 a.m., would you use it at least once per week?

The research question I am trying to answer is: How many students at our school would take advantage of extended library hours?

  2. Population: All high school math students in the U.S.

    Example:

I would ask my math class this survey question:

The main reason I’m taking this class is:

    1) It is a graduation requirement.

    2) It is a college prerequisite.

    3) My parents are making me.

    4) I’m interested in math.

    5) For some other reason.

The research question I am trying to answer is: Why do high school students take math?

  3. Population: U.S. teenagers

    Example:

I would ask my math class this survey question: How far is it from where you live to school or work?

The research question I am trying to answer is: What is the average commute distance to school or work for teenagers?
