For each of the following problems, find all of the solutions without using a calculator. Use a graph or unit circle to support your answers. Then predict the solution that your calculator will give and use your calculator to check your prediction.

Compute without a calculator

  1.

Subtract 2 from both sides and divide by to solve for .

On a unit circle, find the two different times . To give all of the solutions, remember that every time you go around the circle, that value occurs again. Since there are radians in a circle, add to each solution.

Unit Circle, with radius, drawn to a point on the circle, in first quadrant, labeled, pi sixths, + 2 pi, n, & a radius, drawn to a point on the circle, in second quadrant, labeled, 5 pi sixths, + 2 pi, n.

  1.

Use the same method as part (a).

  1. tan

Use the same method as part (a). How is the tangent function different from the sine function?

  1. cos2

Remember to check your answers with your calculator!
