Solve $\sqrt{3x+1}−x=−3$ and check your solution.

1. You should have gotten two values for $x$ when you solved. Did you? If not, rework the problem.

Add x to both sides of the equation, then square each side.

$(x−3)^2\ne x^2+9$

$x=1\ \text{or}\ x=8$

2. Did you check both solutions? What happened?

One of the two solutions is extraneous (does not check).
