1-37.

Eli walked $12$ feet down the hall of his house to get to the door. He continued in a straight line out the door and across the yard to the mailbox, a distance of $32$ feet. He came straight back across the yard $14$ feet and stopped to pet his dog.

1. Draw a diagram of Eli’s walking pattern.

First Eli walked $12$ feet forward to get out the door. Line Diagram: From the starting point there is 12 feet to the door.

Then Eli walked $32$ feet forward to get to the mailbox. Line Diagram: From the door and continuing in the same direction, there is 32 feet from the Door to the Mailbox.

Then he turned around and walked $14$ feet back to his dog. Line Diagram: From the Mailbox and now going in the opposite direction, there is 14 feet from the mailbox to a dog.

2. How far has he walked?

This is asking about how many feet he has walked in total. You do not need to think about direction.

$12\text{ feet}+32\text{ feet}+14\text{ feet}=58\text{ feet}$

3. How far from the house is he now?

First, Eli walked $32$ feet away from the house. Then he walked $14$ feet back toward his house.
