Recall the definition of absolute value from the Math Notes box in Lesson 3.2.4. For each pair of points below, find the distance between the given points. Show your work using absolute value symbols.

1. $( 13,14 ) \text { and } ( - 3,14 )$

• Since the x-values are on opposite sides of zero, add the absolute values of 13 and −3.

$\left | 13 \right |+\left | -3 \right |=16$

• Since the y-values are on the same side of zero, subtract the absolute values of $1$ and $11$.
