Are you ready for a number puzzle?

1. Use the numbers $7, 5, 6$, and $3$, only once each, to create an expression that equals $75$. You may use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division, but you must use parentheses.

Leonidas was given the same numbers and rules and told to create an expression that equals 52. This is what he came up with:

$5(6 + 3) + 7$

Lola was also given the same numbers and rules and told to create an expression that equals 34. This is what she came up with:

$3(6 + 7) − 5$

The solution to this problem is similar to both Leonidas’ and Lola’s solutions.

2. Now use the Distributive Property to write an equivalent expression without parentheses. (You may use the numbers more than once or use different digits for this part only.)

• If Leonidas were given these instructions, he could alter his expression to be $5(6) + 5(3) + 7$.
Use this to help you re-write your expression from part (a).
