4-43.

Each of the diagrams below represents a sequence for a tightrope walker. For each one, explain the sequence and find the length of the unknown trick.

  1. 2 equal line segments. Top: 4 equal sections, each labeled x. Bottom, labeled, 12.

Since the tightrope walker performs the trick times and goes a total of units, this can be thought of as what value times will give ?

    Four times equals .

    The trick is units long.

  1. Two equal line segments. Top: 5 sections, first 4 equal sections, labeled r, last segment labeled, 3. Bottom: 2 sections labeled: left, r, same length as first section above, and right, 21.

The first time he crosses, the tightrope walker performs the trick times and then walks units. Remember to describe the second trip and to find the length of the unknown trick.
