1-40.

The pattern below is composed of nested squares.

A square within a square, with the space between the squares shaded. The inner square side is labeled '1' and the outer square side is labeled '2'.

A square within a square, with the space between the squares shaded. The inner square side is labeled '2' and the outer square side is labeled '3'.

A square within a square, with the space between the squares shaded. The inner square side is labeled '3' and the outer square side is labeled '4'.

  1. Draw the next figure in the pattern.

How are the dimensions of the squares changing?

A square within a square, with the space between the squares shaded. The inner square side is labeled '4' and the outer square side is labeled '5'.

  2. Find the area of the shaded region for the figure you drew in part (a).

Find the area of the shaded region by subtracting the area of the white square from the total area.
