WHICH IS GREATER?

For each Expression Comparison Mat below, simplify and determine which side is greater.  

Shaded tile is plus 1.  Tile is negative 1.

  1. Expression Comparison Mat. Positive Left has 4 positive unit tiles and 3 negative unit tiles.  Negative Left has 2 positive unit tiles and 2 negative unit tiles. Positive Right has 3 positive unit tiles and 2 negative unit tiles. Negative Right has 1 positive unit tile and 3 negative unit tiles.
     

    Refer to the Math Notes box for help with reading the Expression Comparison Mats.

    Remove the zero pairs from the bottom and the top regions.


    The right side is greater.

  1. Expression Comparison Mat. Positive Left has 2 positive unit tiles and 4 negative unit tiles. Negative Left has 1 positive unit tile and 1 negative unit tile. Positive  Right has 1 positive unit tile and 2 negative unit tiles.     Negative Right has 2 positive unit tiles and 1 negative unit tile.
