Examine the shape made with algebra tiles below.

1 unit tile connected, on the right, to a column of 2 horizontal, x tiles, aligned on the top,  which is connected, on the right, to a, y squared tile, aligned on the top.

  1. Write an expression that represents the perimeter of the shape. Then evaluate your expression for and units.

    Label each side with its length and write an expression for the perimeter.

    Evaluate this expression.

    1 unit tile, connected on the right, to a column of 2 horizontal, x tiles, aligned on the top,  which is connected, on the right, to a, y squared tile, aligned on the top. Labels for each edge, of the tiles, starting on the top left, are as follows: 1, x, y, y, y, (y minus 2), x, 1, 1.

  2. Write an expression that represents the area of the shape. What is the area if and units?

    Area is the total square units of a shape.

    It might be helpful to break the shape into parts, find the area of the parts, and then sum them to find the area of the whole.
