3-14.

Write the equation represented in each diagram below on your paper. For each part, simplify as much as possible and then solve for . Be sure to record your work on your paper.  

Shaded tile is plus 1.  Tile is negative 1.

  1. A 4 region equation mat with tiles as follows: Positive left: 3 positive units and 2 positive x's. Negative left: 1 negative unit, and 1 positive x. Positive right: 2 positive x's and 2 negative units. Negative right: 1 negative x.

    Write the original equation.

    Flip subtraction to addition.

    Remove zero pairs.

    Combine like terms.

    Remove an -tile from both sides.

    Add to both sides.

    Divide by on both sides.

  1. A 4 region equation mat with tiles as follows: Positive left: 2 positive x's.  Negative left: 2 negative units, and 1 positive x. Positive right: 2 negative units. Negative right: 1 negative unit and 1 positive x.

    Follow steps similar to part (a).
