4-53.

A first quadrant graph, x axis labeled, Time, y axis labeled, Speed.Sketch a graph to match each story below using axes labeled as shown at right.

  1. Luis rides his skateboard at the same speed all the way home.  It takes him ten minutes to get there.

A first quadrant graph, x axis labeled, Time, y axis labeled, Speed, with a horizontal line, placed about two thirds of the way up, on the y-axis.

  2. Corinna jogs along at the same speed until she reaches a hill, and then she slows down until she finally stops to rest.

A first quadrant graph, x axis labeled, Time, y axis labeled, Speed. A line is graphed, starting horizontally, about two thirds of the way up, on the y-axis, and then descending to the x axis.

  3. Sergei is talking with his friends at the donut shop when he realizes that it is almost time for math class.  He runs toward school, but he slows to a walk when he hears the bell ring and realizes that he is already late.  He sits down in class four minutes after he left the donut shop.

A first quadrant graph, x axis labeled, Time, scaled from 0 to 4, y axis labeled, Speed. Between 0 and 1, a line rises sharply to about half way up on the y axis, then is horizontal, with the label, run, then, drops sharply to about 1 fourth of the way up on the y axis, then is horizontal, with the label, walk, then drops sharply to the x axis.
