5-57.

Determine the coordinates of each point of intersection without graphing. Homework Help ✎

1. $y = - x + 8$
$y=x−2$

Use the Equal Values Method.

Set both equations equal to each other.

Get all the $x$ terms on one side of the equation.

Divide both sides by $−2$ to solve for $x$.

Substitute this value into one of the original equations to solve for $y$.

$−x+8=x−2$

$−2x=−10$

$x=5$

$(5,3)$

1. $y=−3x$
$y=-4x+2$

Follow the steps in part (a).
