3-34.

Solve each equation. Show the check to prove your answer is correct.

1.  $3x+5−x=x−3$

• Start by combining like terms

$2x+5=x−3$

Move $x$ to one side by subtracting $x$ from both sides.

$2x+5−x=x−3−x$

$x+5=−3$

Isolate $x$ by subtracting $5$ from each side.

$x+5−5=−3−5$

Don't forget to check your answer!

$x=−8$

$3(−8)+5−(−8)=−8−3$

1.  $5x−(x+1)=5−2x$

• Use the same steps as (a), but distribute the negative over the parentheses.

Start by combining like terms.

$5x+(−x)+(−1)=5−2x$
