5-24.

Simplify each expression below.

1.  $\frac { 6 x ^ { 2 } y ^ { 3 } } { 3 x y }$

• $2xy^2$

1.  $(-mn)^3$

• What does the exponent tell about repeating ($−mn$) as a factor?

$-m^3n^3$

1.  $(mn)^{-3}$

• What is the rule for negative exponents?

1.  $\frac { 3.2 \times 10 ^ { - 2 } } { 8 \times 10 ^ { 3 } }$

This is equivalent to $\left(\frac{3.2}{8}\right)\left(\frac{10^{-2}}{10^3}\right)$.
