A-57.

For each equation below, evaluate $y$ for the given value of $x$. Homework Help ✎

1.  $y=2+4.3x \text{ when }x=−6$

Substitute $−6$ in for $x$. $y = 2 + 4.3\left(−6\right)$

Multiply and simplify.

$y = 2 + \left(−25.8\right)$

$y = −23.8$

1.  $y=(x−3)^2\text{ when }x=9$

Follow the steps in part (a).

Remember to use the Order of Operations.

1.  $y = x − 2 \text{ when } x = 3.5$

Begin by substituting $3.5$ for $x$ in the equation.

1.  $y = 5x − 4 \text{ when } x = −2$

Rewrite the equation as $y = 5\left(−2\right) − 4$.

$−14$
