Solve each of the following equations. Be sure to check your solutions.

1. $4(x - 1) - 2(3x + 5) = -3x - 1$

Distribute. Notice the minus sign in front of the $2$.

$4x − 4 − 6x − 10 = -3x − 1$

Combine like terms.

$−2x − 14 = −3x − 1$

Solve.

$x = 13$
