4-27.

Solve the following equations. Be sure to check your answers for any extraneous solutions. Homework Help ✎

1. $\sqrt { 2 x - 1 } - x = - 8$

You can solve this graphically or algebraically. For either method, it will simplify the task if you add x to both sides first.

$\sqrt{2x - 1} = x -8$

2x − 1 = (x − 8)2

2x − 1 = x2 − 16x + 64

0 = x2 − 18x + 65

You can use the Zero Product Property to solve.

2. $\sqrt { 2 x - 1 } - x = 0$

Use one of the methods mentioned in part (a).

x = 1
