4-27.

Solve the following equations. Be sure to check your answers for any extraneous solutions. Homework Help ✎

1. $\sqrt { 2 x - 1 } - x = - 8$

You can solve this graphically or algebraically. For either method, it will simplify the task if you add $x$ to both sides first.

$\sqrt{2x - 1} = x -8$

$2x−1=(x−8)^2$

$2x−1=x^2−16x+64$

$0=x^2−18x+65$

You can use the Zero Product Property to solve.

2. $\sqrt { 2 x - 1 } - x = 0$

Use one of the methods mentioned in part (a).

$x=1$
