5-38.

Calculate the x-intercepts for the graph of each function below.

The x-intercepts occur when $y=0$.

1. $y=(x−2)(x+1)$

$0=(x−2)(x+1)$

Use the Zero Product Property to solve:

$x−2=0\ \text{or}\ x+1=0$

2. $y=2x^2+16x+30$

Set $y$ equal to $0$.

Factor.

One of the factors is $(x + 5)$. What is the other factor?

Use the Zero Product Property to solve.
