Square both sides.

Set the equation equal to 0.

Factor.

*x* = *x*² − 4*x* + 4

*x*² − 5*x* + 4 = 0

(*x* − 4)(*x* − 1) = 0

*x* = 4 (*x* = 1 is extraneous)

You will need to square twice.
