Solve each system of equations below.

$y=3x+1$
$x+2y=-5$

Hint (a):
Substitute $3x+1$ for $y$ in the second equation.
$x+2(3x+1)=−5$
Answer (a):
$(−1,−2)$

$2x+3y=9$
$x-2y=1$

Step 1(b):
Multiply the entire second equation by $−2$
$−2x+4y=−2$
Step 2(b):
Add the equations together.
Step 3(b):
Solve for $x$ .
$x=3$
Answer (b):
$(3,1)$
