Calculate the area of the shaded region at right. Use the appropriate units.  

How does the unshaded area compare with the shaded area?

Use the equation for the area of a triangle to find the light triangle's area and subtract it from the entire area.

A rectangle 17 by 8 inch. The rectangle has three internal triangles where one of the bases is the entire 8 inch side and the height is 17 inches.  The other two triangles make up the rest of the rectangle and is shaded.
