A right angled trapezoid with bottom base 3 and top base 6, left side is the perpendicular height, 4, and right side 5. Enlarge the shape at right on graph paper using a zoom factor of $2$ . Then find the perimeter and area of both shapes. What do you notice when you compare the perimeters? The areas?

Step 1:

Enlarge the shape so that the sides are twice as long.

Step 2:

Calculate the area and perimeter for both shapes.

Step 3:

Compare the shapes.

Answer:

The perimeter of the new shape is twice that of the original shape. The new shape's area is four times the area of the original shape.
