4-111.

Consider the sequence $2$, $8$, $3y+5$$\dots$

1. Find the value of $y$ if the sequence is arithmetic.

What is the difference between the first two numbers in the sequence?

Add the difference to $8$.

The third number is $14$, set this equal to $3y+5$.

$y=3$

2. Find the value of $y$ if the sequence is geometric.

$2\cdot?=8$

Follow the same steps from part (a) but replace the addition with multiplication.
