Consider the two similar solids below.  

6 cubes such that the first row has two cubes with a cube on top of each for a total of 4 cubes. The last two cubes are in the second and third rows under the second cube in the first row.

48 cubes such that the first row has 4 cubes with 3 cubes on top of each for a total of 32 cubes. The other 16 cubes form a 2 by 2 by 4 rectangular prism placed horizontally flush on the right side of the 48 cubes in rows 3 through 8.

Refresh your memory about linear scale factors by re-reading the Math Notes boxes in Lessons 8.2.1 and 9.1.5.

  1. Create a mat plan and draw the front, right, and top views for the solid on the left.

  2. What is the linear scale factor between the two solids?

    Find the linear scale factor by finding the zoom factor for any of the dimensions.

  3. Find the surface area of each solid. What is the ratio of the surface areas? How is this ratio related to the linear scale factor?

    The surface area can be found by counting or calculating the number of unit cube faces visible from all sides.

  4. Now find the volumes of each solid. How are the volumes related? Compare this to the linear scale factor and record your observations.

    The volumes can be found by counting the number of unit cubes in each solid or by finding the volume of the two rectangular prisms which make up each solid.
