A cockroach can travel at a speed of $80$ centimeters per second. A centipede can travel at $30$ meters per minute. Which can travel faster?

Review the Math Notes box in Lesson 2.3.1.

Convert the speeds into the same unit per time.

Since the cockroach is in centimeters per second, it seems convenient to convert the centipedes' speed into the same units: centimeters per second.

${\text{Centipede: }\frac{\text{30 meters}}{\text{1 minute}}\cdot \frac{\text{100 centimeter}}{\text{1 meter}}\cdot \frac{\text{1 minute}}{\text{60 seconds}}=\frac{\text{50 centimeters}}{\text{1 second}}}$

Since the cockroach can travel at $80$ cm/second and the centipede can only travel $50$ centimeters/second, the cockroach can travel faster.
