5-39.

Solve each equation.

1. $\frac { 2 x - 8 } { 10 } = 6$

Multiply both sides of the equation by $10$ to clear the fraction.

1. $9^x = 3^{40}$

$9^x = (3^2)^x$
$9^x = 3^{2x}$

Since $3^{2x}$ must be equal to $3^{40}$
the exponents must be equal.
