### Home > INT1 > Chapter 9 > Lesson 9.2.2 > Problem9-59

9-59.

Solve each equation. Be sure to determine and check all of the solutions.

Read Math Note box from 9.2.2 (this section) on solving absolute value equations.

1. $| 9 + 3 x | = 39$

Within the |__| symbols, the
$9 + 3x$ can be $39$ or $9 + 3x$ can be $−39$ (looking inside). So set $9 + 3x = 39$ and $9 + 3x = −39$.

Solve for $x$ in both equations.

Be sure to check both solutions in the original absolute value equation.

$x = 10$ or $x = −16$

1. $| - 3 x + 9 | = 10$

Follow same steps as part (a).

1. $\quad | x + 3 | = - 2$

Follow same steps as part (a).
