A-31.

Simplify the following expressions by combining like terms, if possible. Algebra tiles may be helpful.

1. $x + x − 3 + 4x^{2} + 2x − x$

• Rearrange and put like terms together.

$x+x+2x-x-3-4x^2\\ \searrow \ \downarrow \ \swarrow \swarrow\\ \quad \quad 3x-3+4x^2$

Organize the terms from the greatest to the smallest power.

$4x² + 3x − 3$

1. $8x^{2} + 3x − 13x^{2} + 10x^{2} − 25x − x$

Follow the steps in part (a).

$5x² − 23x$

1. $4x + 3y$

Are there any like terms to combine?

1. $20 + 3xy − 3 + 4y^{2} + 10 − 2y^{2}$

Follow the steps in part (a).
