4-53.

For each function below, make a table of $x\text{-}$ and $y\text{-values}$ and then graph the function on graph paper. Label each graph with its equation.

1. $y=x^2$

Be sure to include negative numbers, positive numbers, and zero in your tables.

2. $y=−x^2$

Be sure to follow the Order of Operations when completing your table. This means squaring first, then multiply by $−1$.

3. Compare the graphs. What do you notice?

4. For the graph of $y=x^2$, estimate the $x\text{-values}$ corresponding to $y=5$.

Locate the points on your graph where $y=5$. What are the $x$-coordinates of those points?

5. For the graph of $y=−x^2$, estimate the $x$-values corresponding to $y=−10$.
