5-89.

Use your generalized process of completing the square to rewrite and solve each quadratic equation below.

Remember, use algebra tiles and/or an area model to help visualize these types of problems.

1. $x^2 + 4x = -3$

$x^2 + 4x + 4 = -3 + 4$

$(x + 2)^2 = 1$

$x+2=\pm1$

$x = –3$ or $–1$

1. $x^2 - 8x + 7 = 0$

$x^2 - 8x + \underline {\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:} = −7 + \underline {\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:}$

1. $x^2 + 5x - 2 = 0$

$x\approx0.37$ or $–5.37$
