1-94.

Five birds from pet stores were observed. The birds ate $60, 60, 50, 40,$ and $50$ grams of food each. What are the mean and sample standard deviation of the weight of food each of these five birds ate? Do the computations step by step, without using the “standard deviation” function on your calculator. Remember that for sample standard deviation, when you compute the mean of the distances squared, you divide by one less than the number of values in the data set.

mean: $52$

Sample standard deviation:

$\sqrt{\frac{(60-52)^2+(60-52)^2+(50-52)^2+(40-52)^2+(50-52)^2}{5-1}}$

Note that we divide by $n - 1$ because this is a sample.
