Argument of a Function

The argument of a function is the expression upon which the function operates. Another word for argument is “input.” For example, the argument of the absolute value function in $y = | x - 1 |$is $x − 1$ and the argument of the squaring function in $y = \left(x + 7\right)^{2}$ is $x + 7$. When working with function notation, the argument is the quantity in the parentheses. For example, in $f\left(x\right)$, $x$ is the argument. In $f\left(3b\right)$, $3b$ is the argument.
