An outfielder throws a ball at $120$ ft/s at an angle $40°$ with the horizontal. Assume that his arm is $7$ feet above the ground when he releases the throw. (Assume no air resistance.)

1. Find the parametric equations for the ball.

Review the Math Notes box in Lesson 10.2.3 titled Projectile Motion.

2. How far does the ball travel before it hits the ground?

First, determine the amount of time it takes for the ball to hit the ground. This occurs when $y\left(t\right) = 0$.

Once you have determined when $y\left(t\right) = 0$, substitute this $t$-value into $x\left(t\right)$ to determine the horizontal distance the ball has traveled.
