Casey wants to know the fractional equivalent of $0.36363636 …$. She lets the number equal $N$, then multiplies both sides of the equation by $10$. When she subtracts, the terms do not cancel. Why? What should she multiply by so that the terms cancel? What is the fractional equivalent of the decimal?

Multiply N by 100, then subtract N.

$100N=36.363636...$
