10-151.

A motion detector can record the distance between a moving person and the detector. Examine the graphs below, each of which was generated when a different person walked in front of a motion detector. For each graph, describe the motion of the person. Did they walk quickly? Did they walk slowly? In what direction did they walk? If the motion is not possible, explain why not.

  1. How does the person's distance from the start point change?

The person starts walking away from the detector and then turns around and starts walking slightly faster towards it.

  1. The person's distance from the start point does not change. What does this mean?

  1. This is not possible because the motion detector cannot simultaneously record two different distances.
