12-38.

Write and solve an equation (or system of equations) for the situation below. Define your variable(s) and write your solution as a sentence.

Jessica has coins that are all dimes and quarters. The number of quarters is fewer than twice the number of dimes. What is the value of her coins?

Think of this situation as:
The number of dimes plus the number of quarters equals .
times the number of dimes minus equals the number of quarters.

Define your variables:
the number of dimes
the number of quarters

Use steps 1 and 2 to build two equations. Then solve for and .

Remember to write your solution as a sentence, not just solve for the variables!
