7-29.

Write and solve an equation (or a system of equations) for the situation below. Define your variables and write your solution as a sentence. Homework Help ✎

Jennifer has a total of four and a half hours to spend on the beach swimming and playing volleyball. The time she spends playing volleyball will be twice the amount of time she spends swimming. How long will she do each activity?

Write an equation in which *x* represents the time spent swimming and 2*x* represents the time spent playing volleyball.*x* + 2*x* = 4.5

Solve for the time spent swimming, *x*, then double that number to find the time spent playing volleyball.

3*x* = 4.5*x* = 1.5

1.5 hours spent swimming and 3 hours spent playing volleyball.
