*x*− 5 = 2 − 4*x*− (*x*− 1)

Combine like terms.

3*x* − 5 = 3*x* − 5

Add 5 to both sides.

3*x* − 5 = 3*x* − 5

+5 +5

3*x* = 3*x*

Since 3*x* is always equal to 3*x*, any number makes this statement true.
