1-123.

Calculate the mean of each data set below. Can you find any shortcuts that allow you to find the mean without having to do a lot of calculation? 1-123 HW eTool (CPM).

1. $6,10,6,10$

You might have noticed there are an equal number of $6$'s and $10$'s. Can this help you find the mean more easily?

The mean of these numbers is $8$. Because there are an equal number of $6$'s and $10$'s, the mean must be halfway between $6$ and $10$. This should make calculations a bit simpler.

2. $11,12,12,13,12$

The values that are not $12$ are just one above and one below $12$. With this knowledge, can you find a shortcut?

3. $0,5,4,8,0,7$

Try adding together the numbers that are not zero in this set. Don't forget to divide the sum by $6$!

The mean is $4$.
