9-47.

Simplify each of the following expressions without a calculator. Show your steps.

1. $-72\div(-9)+(-9)$

First, circle the terms.

$\enclose{circle}{( - 72 \div ( - 9 ) )} + \enclose{circle}{( - 9 )}$

$\frac{-72}{-9}=8$

$8 + \left(−9\right)$

1. $-72\div(-9+(-9))$

Remember to simplify inside the parentheses first.

$- 72 \div ( - 9 + ( - 9 ) )$

1. $-72\div(-9)-(-9)$

$\enclose{circle}{( - 72 \div ( - 9 ) )} - \enclose{circle}{( - 9 )}$

The terms are circled above. Now simplify!

1. $-80\div20-15-(-5)$

Circle the terms.

$\enclose{circle}{- 80 \div 20} - \enclose{circle}{15} - \enclose{circle}{( - 5 )}$
