Copy the diagrams of algebra tiles below on your paper. Then find the perimeter of each shape.  

  1. A row of algebra tiles: horizontal x tile and a unit tile. Underneath the x tile, aligned on the left, is an x squared tile.

    The perimeter is the sum of all the sides. What is the value of each side?

    Label each side piece.

    Sides of the algebra tile diagram are labeled as follows, starting at the upper right, and going clockwise: x, 1, 1, 1, x, x, x, 1

    Now, add up all of the sides to find the perimeter.

    Simplify to get .

  1. A row of algebra tiles, aligned on top and bottom, from left to right: 2 vertical, x tiles, x squared tile.

    Refer to part (a).

    Label each side.

    Sides of the algebra tile diagram are labeled as follows, starting at the upper left, and going clockwise: 1, 1, x, x, x, 1, 1, x.
