Two mechanics can assemble bicycles in hours.

  1. How many bicycles could one mechanic assemble in hours?

There are half as many mechanics working for the same amount of time.

  2. Use what you determined in part (a) to write the unit rate for one bicycle mechanic to assemble bicycles.

Represent the number of bicycles one mechanic was able to assemble in eight hours as a fraction.

  3. Write an equation that relates the rate, bicycles, and time needed for one mechanic. Let t represent time and b represent bicycles assembled.

The number of bicycles will equal the rate multiplied by the time.

  4. Use your equation to find out how long it would take one mechanic to assemble bicycles.

    Substitute for the variable.
