4-34.

A rectangular park is $150$ yards on one side and $125$ yards on the other.

1. If Debbie walks around the park two times, how far does she walk? Sketch a figure and show your work.

First, find the distance around the park (remember it is a rectangle). It will help to draw the figure.

The distance around the park is $550$ yards.

 rectangle interior right edge$125 \text{ yards}$ bottom edge$150 \text{ yards}$

Now, find the distance Debbie walks. Remember that she walks around the park twice.

2. If Debbie wanted to walk $1{,}000{,}000$ yards, how many times would she have to walk around the park?

Divide the total distance Debbie wishes to walk by the answer to Step 1 in part (a).

Walking around the park $1818$ times gets Debbie $999{,}900$ yards. Debbie needs to walk around the park $1819$ times.
